Body Armor Drink For Breastfeeding: Does It Increase Milk Supply? (My Results)

If you are breastfeeding or pumping, you may be wondering if the Body Armor drink can increase your breast milk supply and help with milk production. 

I bought a few bottles of Body Armor and Body Armor Lyte to see if these electrolyte drinks would work to increase my milk supply. When I was pumping for my daughter, I hoped that these drinks would give me a few extra ounces in my pumping sessions.

Does The Body Armor Drink Help With Breastfeeding

Yes, body armor may help some moms with breastfeeding, but it has not been scientifically proven. It may help if you are struggling with your milk supply when pumping and breastfeeding. 

Body Armor can help give you a boost of a few extra ounces, but if you are struggling with your milk supply, you may also want to try another technique at the same time.

The best way to increase milk supply is to remove milk more frequently through extra pumping or nursing sessions. One of the best techniques to do this is through power pumping.

Does Body Armor Increase Milk Supply

Yes, Body Armor may increase milk supply for some moms. The thing to remember is that it will depend on your body and how well you respond to extra hydration. 

This drink is not a “magic pill”, but it might help you produce a few extra ounces, especially if you are not well hydrated to begin with.

The body armor drink can help with breast milk production because it has a few ingredients that help you to stay hydrated. The extra calories from the drink may also help with milk supply.

The ingredients in this drink that can help with milk production are:

  • Electrolytes
  • Coconut Water
  • Extra Fluids
  • Extra Calories

One of the main ingredients in Body Armor is coconut water, which is high in electrolytes. These electrolytes can help you if you are not drinking enough fluids or if you are slightly dehydrated.

Another component of the drink is that it is (obviously) a liquid and drinking any type of fluid can help you if you are dehydated.

The regular version of the drink (the one that is not marked as “lyte”) also contains calories from sugar. Some women notice a big impact on their milk production when they eat or drink extra calories.

The hormones from breastfeeding definitely made me super thirsty. I always carried around a water bottle when I was pumping for my little one.

Sometimes I knew that hydration was not the problem with milk supply and I needed a little more help than what I could get from drinking water or Body Armor.

When I needed an extra boost for my milk supply, I would use these supplements that I found on Etsy. They had such great reviews and I loved that they did not contain any fenugreek.

Studies on Milk Supply and Drinking More Water and Fluids

So, you might be wondering – is there any science to back this up?

There have been a few studies done on hydration in moms and the impact on their milk supply. These studies didn’t cover body armor, but they did involve mothers drinking extra fluids.

The thing to remember about these studies is that they only covered a small number of women (10 in the first study and 26 in the second study). 

A study from 1992, showed that the days where women drank more fluids, their milk supply was higher. The days where they drank less fluids, their milk supply was lower. 

Another study from 1985 found that moms who drank extra fluids didn’t have a statistically significant impact on their milk supply.

One of my thoughts on this study is that it only covered a small number of women, and they all had a normal milk production (around 27 – 30 oz per day). 

If you are producing less than that, it might be worth it to try increasing the amount of water you drink to see if it helps your milk supply.

Another thought is that what is significant in research might be different that what is significant to you as a mother. 

You might be really happy to produce an extra 2 ounces or 3 ounces of milk if you drink some extra water or body armor.

Which Body Armor Is Best For Breastfeeding (Body Armor or Lyte)

Both the regular Body Armor and Body Armor Lyte are good for breastfeeding moms. The one that works the best depends on if you want to drink one that is sweetened with sugar or with a sugar substitute. 

The one that worked the best for me was the Blue Pomegranate Body Armor Lyte, because I preferred to have a drink with less sugar in it.

Both Body Armor and Body Armor Lyte have these ingredients

  • Coconut water
  • Electrolytes
  • Vitamins & Minerals

The coconut water and electrolytes are the ingredients that can help boost milk supply for moms, so both work well for boosting milk supply.

The biggest difference is that Body Armor Lyte has fewer calories and a lot less sugar. My bottle of Body Armor Lyte was sweetened with Erythritol, which is a common sugar substitute.

As a side note, you might be surprised how many calories that breastfeeding and pumping burns. It is probably more than you think!

How Fast Does Body Armor Increase Milk Supply

I found that Body Armor took a few hours to increase my milk supply. It typically took anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours to see an increase in my supply depending on a few different factors.

You can try drinking it either while you are pumping, or when you have about 2 hours until the beginning of my next pumping session. 

You might see the increase during the next pumping session. Or, if you are drinking it in the afternoon or evening, you might see the increase overnight or the next morning.

Does Coconut Milk or Coconut Water Increase Milk Supply

Coconut Milk and Coconut water can increase milk supply. A lot of women think that this is the secret ingredient to the Body Armor drink boosting their milk supply.

Coconut Milk is also the “secret ingredient” in the Starbucks Pink drink that so many moms swear by for boosting their milk supply.

My Results & Method

I decided to drink Body Armor after a few other moms recommended it to me. Here is the process I followed, so you can steal it!

  1. Wake up in the morning and power pump
  2. Drink a Body Armor during the power pumping session
  3. 3 hours later, pump again. (You can follow the pumping schedules I outlined in this article)

This second pumping session of the day was when I would usually see the increase in milk production. I went from typically pumping 2 or 3 ounces during that session to around 5 ounces! 

Is The Body Armor Drink Safe While Breastfeeding?

You can always reach out to your OBGYN and ask him or her if the drink is safe while breastfeeding. 

My OB told me that I was ok to drink it as long as I did not overdo it. One (or maybe two) per day is plenty to try it out.

I felt comfortable drinking it because there were not any ingredients that concerned me, and the ingredients are similar to Gatorade. Be sure to check with your doctor if you are worried!
